Ideas for a sustainable, cost effective festive season

As the festive season approaches (it is everywhere now isn’t it?!), this is the perfect time to celebrate with loved ones, spread joy, and, especially now, plan for the big events at the end of December. While we all naturally get caught up in the excitement, it is also understandable to feel a bit daunted with regards to the increased costs and consumption of the season: from the masses of food, to the rolls of wrapping paper and gifts yet to be purchased. Add to it the impact it all has on the planet and it is easy to feel overwhelmed by it all.

Luckily, it is not an all-or-nothing approach. By making small, conscious choices, we can create a more sustainable and eco-friendly festive season that also helps with cost-cutting.

In this blog post, we'll explore some easy tips to help you make your celebrations greener without sacrificing the joy and spirit of the season, and hopefully saving you a few pennies along the way!

Mindful Decorations:

Decorations play a significant role in setting the festive ambiance. Opt for sustainable choices by reusing and repurposing decorations from previous years. If you're in the mood for something new, consider making DIY decorations using recyclable materials (cardboard origami anyone?) or natural elements like pinecones and dried leaves - these can often add a personal touch to your tree or decorated house. Additionally, things like choosing energy-efficient LED lights will reduce electricity consumption, or look for a timer for your tree lights, so that you can ensure they are off overnight.

Eco-Friendly Gift Wrapping:

Gift giving is a cherished tradition during the festive season. Instead of using conventional wrapping paper that often ends up in the trash, explore eco-friendly alternatives. Wrap gifts in recycled paper or use fabric, scarves, or even old maps to create unique wrapping. Have children at home? Consider getting some brown, recycled paper and have them decorate them, it will add a personal touch to your gifts and can be easily recycled again at the end of the celebrations.

Another idea is to use reusable gift bags or boxes that can be enjoyed and reused by the recipient.

Thoughtful Gifting:

Thoughtful and meaningful gifts can have a lasting impact while reducing the environmental footprint associated with mass-produced items. Consider giving gifts that promote sustainability and ethical practices, and that ideally will last for at least a few years.

Support local artisans and businesses, or choose products made from recycled, biodegradable or upcycled materials. For example, our Onyx mats are an ideal gift that won't cost the Earth as it is fully biodegradable and will last for many years!

Alternatively experiences are always welcomed, and even gift cards for products that you know your loved one has an eye on can really help go a long way!

Sustainable Feasting:

Food is a central part of festive celebrations, however it can be where a lot of waste happens, and also where a lot of the money can go. Reduce food waste by planning meals carefully and only buying what you need, and make the most of every ingredient - including saving scraps for stocks and broths.

Buying local and organic ingredients can also help support sustainable agriculture practices and reduce transportation emissions, as well as help support the local economy.

Another way to reduce costs is by incorporating more plant-based dishes into your menu, which at the same time reduces the environmental impact of meat production.

Encourage guests to bring their own containers for leftovers to minimise plastic and food waste. This will guarantee to save everyone some money and ensures the food doesn't go to waste. Also, not forget that you freezer is your friend! Freeze batch leftovers as soon as possible to enjoy later in the week or month!

Mindful Travel:

If you're planning to travel during the festive season, explore environmentally friendly transportation options like trains or buses. Another way to cut your emissions (and costs!) is by carpooling with friends or family heading to the same area.

Try to pack as lightly as possible, not only does it make it easier for you, but a lower weight in vehicles or aeroplanes will reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

By adopting sustainable practices, you can create a win-win situation, where you not only contribute to a healthier planet but also save money in the process. So, let's celebrate in harmony with nature, make this festive season truly special, and enjoy the added benefit of cost-cutting through sustainable choices!
