+ Which mat is right for me?

Your mat decision is very personal and depends not only on your needs but also your usual workout experience. As such, we’re not here to tell you what mat you should get but to give you a few pointers on what mat might be best suited to you:

  • If you are a sweaty person: our Pro mats will be perfect as they feature a sweat-activated grip so that the mats get grippier the more you sweat!
  • If you do not sweat much but are looking for tonnes of grip: the Onyx collection is for you as it works best with dry hands/feet. It does remain grippy with a little sweat on your hands, making it our most versatile mat.
  • If your flow takes you in every direction: the Pro Round mat and the Onyx Round mat give you more space for a creative flow in any direction.
  • If you're a tall person - go with a Studio or Travel mat.
  • If you are constantly on the move and taking your mat with you: the Travel mat will be your best companion as it is thinner and lighter than the other mats, making it easy to carry around.
  • If you don't have much space at home or prefer an original Yoga mat style, then the Studio and Travel mats are for you.

+ Does the round mat come in a larger size?

We chose 140cm diameter as it allows a full workout while still being portable. Any larger and it would be very heavy and wouldn't fit in classes.

We find the slightly shorter length isn't too much of a problem - your feet may be off in planks or push ups but you don't need lateral grip for those poses anyway. You generally spend more time on a round mat because you can step to the side or lie with your hands to the sides without coming off the mat for example.

+ What are the differences between all the mats?

All our mats use the same recycled natural rubber base. Our Pro mats top surface gets grippier as you sweat so is more suitable for sweaty workouts compared with the Onyx collection which have an instant grip surface, but performs less well with very sweaty hands.

In terms of the difference between Studio and Travel: if you'll be placing the mat over a gym/studio's mats or using it over carpet, the Travel mats will be fine, but if you prefer something a bit thicker, we recommend going with the Studio or Studio mats.

+ How do I use the Form Grid?

The Form Grid is very versatile and is designed to work for people of any height, doing a range of different forms of yoga, Pilates and other mat-based exercise.

We normally encourage people to use the Grid whichever way suits their style and practice. Here are a few useful tips that may help:

  • Position your centre-line over the line running lengthwise across the mat to ensure better alignment;
  • Place forearms along the triangular shape at the outer edge of the mats for a consistent plank;
  • Use line intersections to place your hands during push-ups or hand plank for more consistent movement and measurable improvement.
  • For poses such as warrior you can place your front facing forward along the line running lengthways, with your backfoot facing perpendicular along one of the intersecting lines at the furthest ends of the Grid.

As you use the Grid, you'll come to develop new techniques that suit your particular style.

+ My new mat slips, what can I do?

Our Pro mats are moisture activated so they work best with sweaty hands - a couple of things to try:

  • We recommend doing a short warm-up before you get started with your workout, which has the added benefit of reducing the chance of injury.
  • Another thing we recommend to do with our new mats is to get a damp towel and rub the mat fairly hard all over - give it a good scrub! When the mats are new, the fine fibres in the surface are aligned from the production process, but we want them to face in different directions. Give this a go before your next workout - it should help.
  • Finally, you can also try spraying the mat, or your hands, with water before your workout to ensure the moisture activated top grips from the start of your practice.

Caring for your Form mat

+ How should I clean my Onyx mat?

To keep your Onyx mat clean, we recommend just wiping with a damp cloth when it starts feeling a little dirty. You can add a bit of soapy water to the cloth sparingly to remove the buildup of oils, but we wouldn't recommend doing this frequently.

+ How do I clean my Pro mat?

For everyday dirt, simply wipe your Pro mat down with a damp cloth, you can add a bit of soap for really stubborn marks.

To machine-wash: place your mat in the machine with a bit of detergent (no bleach) and also something to cushion it. Wash at a medium-low speed at about 30°C. To dry, simply hang somewhere warm and dry, avoiding direct sunlight. Ensure the mat is hanging flat as it dries.

Your mat will be like new again!

+ Can I use my mat outdoors?

Absolutely, a lot of people like to use their mats outdoors and enjoy practising around nature! If this is you, then we would recommend going for one of the thicker mats if practising on a rougher surface as they will be more comfortable.

Our Pro mats are all machine washable, so if your mat gets too dirty you can always pop it in the wash and it'll be clean and fresh for your next practice.

Of course, your mat will last longer when it is less exposed to the conditions but in particular we recommend trying to avoid full, direct sunlight - light rain should be fine as it will make our Pro mats grippier!

+ How should I store my mat?

Your mat will arrive rolled into a cardboard box and include a carrying strap or mat bag. You can always keep it rolled in the box or simply rolled and strapped ready to go! Try to keep it rolled, as opposed to folded, to avoid any markings. We also recommend storing a rolled mat on it's side, as opposed to standing on the end, to avoid the ends being damaged.

Make sure to keep it in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and always store it once it is fully dry.

Sustainability

+ What are your mats made of?

Our mats are made from 100% human-friendly, recycled materials:

  • The base of all our mats are made from recycled natural tree rubber
  • The grippy top is made from recycled plastic bottles (Pro mats) or biodegradable PU (Onyx mats)

Many mats on the market today are made from PVC or other toxic materials, meaning you may be harming your health rather than improving it when you workout!

Our mats are free from silicone, toxic glue and phthalates so you can get your sweat on in peace.

All of our mats are created with the environment at the heart of every decision. All our products and packaging are made from recycled, recyclable and/or biodegradable materials and are designed to last years. You can read more about how we go about calculating and offsetting our carbon emissions here.

+ What do I do when my mat has reached the end of its lifespan?

We hate landfill! We don’t believe anything we buy today should be designed in a way meaning it cannot be easily recycled or biodegraded at the end of life.

We design all our mats to be durable last many years (no planned obsolescence here), when it does eventually come to the end of your mats life:

  • Pro mats can be recycled - check with your local council for best practice
  • Onyx mats can be bio-degraded - in normal soil conditions, our Onyx mats completely disappear within 2 to 5 years

+ How do you carbon offset?

As a Climate Neutral certified fitness company we offset our carbon emissions (from production and transportation right through to your door) through Climate Neutral's verified carbon credits which go towards a number of projects involving renewable energy, reforesting, capturing biogas and more! You can read more about the process and offsetting here.

Prior to being certified, we offset ourselves via Carbon Footprint through their Global Portfolio which invests in renewable energy projects in developing countries around the world. As part of our commitment to do as much as we can, we continue to donate to these renewables projects.

We also recently joined Treeapp which partners with NGOs to plant the trees in projects around the world - check it out and you can help plant more trees for free.

+ How do you ship your products and ensure the process remains carbon neutral?

Once our mats are produced, they are shipped via sea to our UK warehouse from where the mats are dispatched to you. This sea shipping is partly why it takes us a while to restock when we sell out! The reason we use sea shipping as opposed to other options, is that it releases low carbon per kg.

As a Climate Neutral certified fitness company we offset of our carbon emissions (from production and transportation right through to your door) through our certification partner's programmes, including reforesting and clean energy projects.
