Our bodies were not made to sit down all day. It's a harsh reality, but we cannot ignore the facts: sitting for over 6 hours a day for 10-20 years can cut away around 7 years of your life. It raises your risk of dying of heart disease by 64% and your risk of breast or prostate cancer increases by 30%.
Unfortunately, most of us find ourselves sat at a desk all day and then sat on the sofa all evening. Here are 7 things you can do today to begin to counteract the negative effects of sitting all day:
Stand up at least once an hour: why not get up and get yourself a drink every hour, a glass of water will help you stay hydrated;
Get around 30 minutes of activity per day: hit the gym, take the dog for a walk or dance around your house;
Get moving whilst watching television:
We know, after a long day at work all you want to do is Netflix & chill, but what if we told you that watching the television in the evening is actually the perfect opportunity to add years onto your life and keep you healthy for decades to come, with very little effort.
Here are a few things you can do instead of giving in to your inner couch potato:
Get yourself some resistance bands: resistance bands allow you to stretch and tone your body whenever and wherever you are, for 33 great exercises to start you off take a look here;
Stretch: watching TV in the evening is the perfect time to fit in those stretches that you know you should be doing at the end of your workout. Without regular conditioning and stretching, muscles can become very stiff, often causing problems with the back and limiting range of movement as we grow older. Don't let your other health and fitness efforts go to waste just because you didn't stretch!
Abs: Doing some simple sit-ups won't disrupt your view of the screen but will contribute towards that six-pack you've always dreamed of;
Core: Missed Pilates again this week? Why not do these simple exercises to improve your core strength and protect you from back pain.
