Whenever there’s talk about boosting productivity, it basically comes down to figuring out how to work smarter. And while the concept is different for every person depending on their approach to work and definition of success, every description of working smarter seems to revolve around being more self-aware of your goals and leveraging other people’s time and money. Boosting your productivity is often all about working in a more deliberate manner, prioritising your needs, identifying gaps, cutting losses, and knowing when to ask for help.
Here are some techniques to achieve laser productivity in your typical workday:
1. Tackle the hardest and most important task of the day first 🐸
This ties back to Mark Twain’s famous comment “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day”. Structure your day to allow you to focus on the most important tasks at the time of day when you are most productive. For many, these means tackling your biggest, most important tasks (your frogs) first thing, when you are fresh.
2. Consider chunking instead of multitasking 🧠
Chunking involves breaking up your day into chunks of similar tasks at one time so you can stay focused and productive as you switch between tasks. This concept is based on the premise that focusing on and completing a single task is more efficient than switching from one job to another avoiding the flurry of new information and other distractions in between.
3. Avoid distractions 🎯
Easier said than done in this case, but it comes with some pretty great benefits once mastered. It takes a certain willpower to stay off of Facebook, YouTube, and other work distractions - we all know how hard it can be when we fall down the rabbit hole of Instagram. Instead of endless scrolling, take a few minutes at the start of the day to stop and be mindful of how you wish to spend your time.
If you feel yourself reaching for your phone or opening a new tab not meant for work, recognise the situation and train your mind to focus back on the task at hand. Regular, deliberate breaks can help
4. Shorten your to-do list 📜
No... don’t ignore or procrastinate other tasks for the sake of shortening your to-do list. Instead, write only your top three most important tasks to accomplish for that day. This keeps you grounded even as you work on the other not-so-important but necessary tasks for the day. Having a short list also keeps you from feeling overwhelmed especially in moments when you feel stuck in a certain task.
5. Delegate what you can, when you can 🤝
You can’t and shouldn’t do all the work. Executing certain tasks comes more naturally to different people so let those people handle those tasks where possible. This frees up valuable time to focus on what you should actually be doing. If you’re managing a team, then hire specialists and let them do their thing while you do yours.
Are you ready to work on boosting your productivity?
Of course, you are! And these five handy tips will help get you going down the right path. Now there’s nothing left to it, but to go get it done and in no time, you’ll be working smarter and getting more work done in less time.
